The Five Studies on a Trombone Melody were originally composed in preparation for the music theatre performance work The Last Supper and the choral work Mass for Lost Souls. Commissioned by the Pipeline ensemble it was first performed at the North Melbourne town hall. The conductor for the premiere was also a baritone, which explains the referencerto a baritone in the sixth movement. If a baritone is not available for the final movement, the trombone is to play the baritone part in the first section (Figure A).

Some of the studies were later developed for The Last Supper and Mass for Lost Souls.
These are:
-
Melody, later renamed 'Perceptiio';
-
Chords, later named 'Secreta'; and
-
Mozaic, later named 'Credo'.
