Memory Pieces

for Piano, Pre-recorded Sound and Speaker

Date: 1985

Total duration:  15.00

The Memory Pieces are a collection of works exploring some of the experiences associated with remembering. Diverse in their style, they bring together music theatre, experimental music, avant-garde influences, postmodern aesthetics and piano virtuosity.

These works explore music and meaning where the title, functioning like an ellipsis, enigmatically establishes a context for the music to evoke associations for the listener. The composing of the works was informed by film music and sound theory, semiotics, and irony.

The movements can be played in any order. The first work  'A piano reminisces' is based on music theorist Allen Forte’s extraordinary book: The structure of atonal music. A piano reminisces and an adaption of Mazurka Europa! are also included in the composer’s Ten Preludes for Piano.

Recorded by Daniel Herscovitch on the album The Hands the Dream for the Tall Poppies label (TP020), these works have enjoyed many iterations and performances.
